Uploading work to the Designlab platform
Troubleshooting upload issues
File upload issues are often caused by attempting to upload files that are too large. Before uploading, ensure that your file is a PNG, JPG, or PDF, is under 5MB in size, and has dimensions smaller than 12,500 px in both height and width.
Uploads might also fail, or your images may appear unclear, if the resolution is too low or too high. To avoid these issues, follow these tips:
Choose an appropriate artboard size:
When creating a new artboard for your project in Figma, Sketch, or another design tool, select an appropriate size. In Figma or Sketch, press “A” to access standard screen size options in the Inspector (the panel on the right).
Understand scale and resolution:
Especially if you’re new to digital design, understanding the scale of your work can be challenging. Use these shortcuts to view your design at actual size:
- In Figma: Press Shift + 0 (zero).
- In Sketch: Press Command + 0 (zero).
Use reference screenshots:
Take a screenshot of a website or app and paste it directly into Figma or Sketch. Place it next to your artboard to guide text size, spacing, and element dimensions.
By following these tips, you can create designs that are properly scaled and ensure smooth uploads to the platform.
Uploading Multiple Pages
Option 1: Export as PDF and Upload a Multiple-Page PDF
If you created the screens in Figma, follow these steps to export your work:
- Select the frames you want to export.
- Go to Menu > File > Export frames to PDF.
This will compile all of your selected frames into a single PDF document that you can upload as one submission. Keep in mind that there is an upload limit of 5MB. If your file exceeds this size, you can use free online PDF compressors. However, be aware that compressing your PDF might reduce the visual quality of your work.
Option 2: Share a Link to Your Figma File
Alternatively, you can share a link to your Figma file by doing the following:
- Upload a screenshot of your work to the submission.
- Include the link to your Figma file in the submission comment.
This allows your mentor to review your work directly in Figma and leave comments on the Designlab platform. Before using this method, confirm with your mentor that they are okay with this approach.
