Advanced Courses: Onboarding & Getting Started
|
This article covers everything you need to know about onboarding and getting started for your Advanced course. Questions covered in this article: |
Launch day process and timing
On launch day, you’ll receive an email with instructions to help you get started with your course. This email will arrive by 5:00 PM ET at the latest, though it’s often sent earlier.
If you haven’t received access by 5:00 PM ET, don’t worry—just reach out to us, and we’ll make sure you’re all set to begin.
Launching Your Advanced Course: What to Expect
All Advanced Courses officially launch on Fridays! When your course goes live, you’ll gain full access to the curriculum through your student dashboard. From that point, you can start exploring right away—review the structure of each unit, check upcoming assignments, and get familiar with the platform.
Your First Week
Although your course launches on Friday, Week 1 officially begins on the first Monday following launch. The few days between launch and Monday are designed to give you a head start—time to browse lessons, review resources, and prepare for the interactive parts of the course.
Live Lectures (if included)
Some Advanced Courses, such as AI for UX Design and AI for Visual Design, include live lectures that start on the first Monday after your course launches.
Live Lectures are hosted in Livestorm, so you’ll receive an email shortly after launch—and again before each session—with lecture times and your personal join links. After each lecture, you’ll also get a recording link by email, and recordings will be added directly to the first lesson of each unit for easy access anytime.
Peer Group Sessions
Mid-week, you’ll meet with your peer group—typically on Wednesday, Thursday, or Friday. These sessions are a chance to discuss key topics, share feedback, and connect with other designers. You’ll find your peer group schedule on the right-hand side of your dashboard, along with a Join Session button when it’s time. If you miss a meeting, a recording will appear in the same spot once it’s available.
What If I can’t start the course on launch day?
No problem! If you’re unable to start on launch day, you’ll still have some flexibility to complete the coursework at your own pace.
That said, we encourage you to review the materials and complete the exercises before meeting with your peer group. Staying on track ensures you’re prepared to participate fully in discussions and activities, which will enhance your learning experience.
Figma setup
Account requirements
|
A Figma Pro or Figma Education account is only required for the following courses:
All other courses can be completed using a free Figma Starter account. |
Important: The Starter Figma account is not sufficient for our Prototyping in Figma or AI Prototyping Camp course, as it lacks key features required for assignments and exercises.
If you don’t already have a Figma Pro account, you can sign up for a free Figma Education account using your Designlab student status. This account will give you access to all the features necessary for the course.
Using an existing Figma pro account
If you already have a Figma Pro account through your company, you don’t need to set up an Education account. You can continue using your existing Figma Pro account throughout the course. The Education plan is intended to support students who don’t have access to Figma Pro.
Figma's education verification process can take up to 10 business days.
Designlab does not have control over Figma's verification process, approval decisions, or timeline. All verification is managed directly by Figma.
Troubleshooting Figma access
If you encounter any issues setting up your Figma account, you can:
- Post your question in the Designlab Discord community, where your mentor or peers can help troubleshoot.
-
Reach out to the Designlab Team for assistance.
Set up FLORA (Required for AI for Visual Design)
FLORA is a tool you’ll use throughout the AI for Visual Design course. You’ll need access starting Day 1, so we strongly recommend setting up your account before your first live session.
Step 1: Create your FLORA account
Create a FLORA account (or log in if you already have one).
Confirm you can access the platform successfully.
Step 2: Redeem your free month of FLORA Starter (Designlab perk)
Designlab students get 1 month of FLORA Starter free.
To redeem it:
Go to the Designlab perks page.
Find the FLORA perk.
Follow the redemption steps listed there to activate your free month of FLORA Starter.
Important: Make sure you redeem the perk before Day 1, so you’re ready to participate in course activities right away.
